ABOUT PROF. NIYATI MEHTA

PROF. NIYATI MEHTA

Digital, Communication & Behavioral Design Nudge Consultant

Overview

As a passionate designer, I’ve always desired to amalgamate my design skills with my passion for impacting the world. Good design can change the world for the better when bound together with ethics, values, experiences, and cultural elements.

It has always been my passion to keep my cultural identity alive while being exceptionally interested in the diverse cultures across the globe. I believe empathy is a value system that must be embedded in our educational system. Therefore as a professor, I always encourage my students to be empathetic listeners, learn from shared experiences leading them to develop an anti-bias mindset.

I would describe my forte being Interdisciplinary teaching as I have a knack for using my teachings and assignments so that it is effortless yet insightful for my students to put theory to practice in everyday real-life experiences and scenarios. This sparks self-reflection while makes learning fun for the students and hopefully inspires a lasting change from within.

  Creativity for Society

Harnessing technology to impact behavior

Anti-Racism with anti-bias approach Education Toolkit/ Picturebook
2020
Co-authored The Kaleidoscope of Human Color, an educational toolkit for children to understand and appreciate the diversity of skin hues around them through insightful examples(in process of publishing)

  • It attempts to guide the narrative of human color from an early age to avoid bias formation.
  • The flashcards contain compelling visual cues, inspiring playtime activities, and insightful dialogue to engage children from 0-9 years of age.
  • The idea is to introduce human skin tonalities to children using elements from our natural environment.

Fighting Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Cremona Hospital, Italy

2019 – Work in Progress
At Cremona Hospital in Italy, we are underway on a project that through cutting-edge cellular technology will enable gamification to impact child behavior positively and help control and stimulate their thought processes. This will work to serve timely reminders to children to consume their medicine. The mobile application works in a way where once the child has taken his or her diabetes medicine, the parents get a notification in whichever corner of the globe they may be. Steps that harnessed visuals to bring about positive social innovation.

2018
(a) “Nand Ghar” Western and Northwestern India
A Corporate Social Responsibility activity by the government of India in which we applied visual design, combined with cognitive psychology to bring about social innovation.

(b) Muktagan , Municipality Schools (NGO) Mumbai, India
A project that generated the application of psychology, behavioral economics, and design targeting to improve “anger management” and “name-calling” in grade 6/7 in the municipal school for underprivileged children. An illustration of how directed and defaulted visual cues trigger the impact of a behavior change.

(c) Panthawada, Taluka Dantiwada, Banas Kantha, Western rural India
A project which involved creating and developing visuals towards improving cleanliness and living conditions for villagers. Designed visual nudges, which directed villagers to keep the surrounding clean, thereby proving that art and graphic design is an impactful tool when combined with psychology.

  Creativity for Sustainability

Steps that harnessed visuals to promote sanitary choice architecture

  Creativity for a Hospitable Environment

Steps that harnessed visuals for Campus planning activities and facilities
Campus Planning & Facilities, Lehman College, Bronx, NY

2017 – Present
By creating visual graphics for the garbage bins in cafeterias towards recycling awareness, and having a cleaner environment, we motivated students directing them towards sustainability. The project was not only about designing nudges but taking charge of the overall spectrum including the correct and clever placement of the messages. This step was taken with varying degrees of success after the more conventional emails, posters, and fliers were initially unsuccessfully sent out.

IT & Computer Department, Lehman 360
Lehman 360 is a revolutionary approach to use the college mobile-based application to help students find their way around the many different, activities, buildings, and individuals across the campus. Lehman 360 and its usage was also encouraged in thought-provoking ways using visually designed nudges to encourage students to download it. The app was also used as a medium to motivate students to enroll for 15 credits at a time and hence help them achieve a timely graduation.

Teaching Design. By Design.

Effective learning starts with learner(student) relevance, and every subject/topic can prove valuable once a student sees a connection between the content and their life The ability to see my students reflect, critique, debate, and rethink society and the world in which they live; and endeavor to understand design to accommodate needs, perception and behavior is truly my strongest achievement as an educator.
